Reefer Import appointments to enable more efficient pickups, saving up to 30 minutes per load
Florida International Terminal (FIT), port operator of a 41 acre marine terminal in the Southport area of Port Everglades, who successfully deployed the eModal Community Portal (eCP) PreGate module in June 2019 has now mandated all reefer import moves require an appointment in an effort to improve turn times and customer service.
FIT is the first port terminal in South Florida to implement an appointment system.
Port Authority expands mandatory appointment requirements following continued reduction in turn times.
As published on JOC.com (see full article)
The Port of Virginia will require trucking companies to have appointments to pick up or drop off containers through 3 p.m. beginning Dec. 9, extending the mandatory window an additional hour and leaving only two hours at the end of the day for unfettered access.
The initial plan was to begin the new hours on Dec. 2, but port officials pushed back the change because of the Thanksgiving Day weekend.
Appointments have been well received by trucking companies after a rocky start in March 2018. Even a group of truck drivers have come around to understanding the merits. These drivers were initially worried the appointment system would harm local draymen, who are paid by the job and depend on easy access in and out of the terminal several times each day.
New portal aims to leverage the industry standard eModal Community Portal to enable digitization and improve cargo visibility through a centralized information hub
Advent eModal today unveiled the Portal for Panama initiative for container terminal operators and their port constituents moving cargo through the Panama Canal zone.
Born of extensive outreach with key terminal operators, shippers, truckers and other stakeholders in the Panama Canal area, the Portal for Panama aims to enable digitization, foster collaboration and improve cargo visibility and velocity in the region by leveraging the proven eModal Community Portal (eCP) port community platform currently in use at major port gateways across the U.S.
This community outreach led to a successful Portal for Panama Summit meeting in Panama City in April 2019. Here, senior leadership from the Panama port and logistics community, including representatives from a majority of the Panama Canal area terminals, the Panama Canal Railway Company (PCRC) and key trucking and logistics providers, came together for the first time to engage in a closed-door session exploring the potential for a shared, independent and secure landside logistics portal.
Today, the Portal for Panama is gaining traction as eModal has completed data integration with Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) and has started initial testing with Colón Container Terminal (CCT). The primary goal is to create a single, centralized information hub that will integrate with all container terminals in the region to digitize and drive key data and visibility to all port stakeholders.
eModal PreGate and Fee Manager Applications to power new gate appointment system and automated fee payment capability for leading Florida container terminal
Port Everglades Terminal (PET), a 40 acre terminal in the South Port area of Port Everglades in Florida, has selected Advent’s eModal platform to meet its needs for an integrated gate appointment and automated fee payment solution.
“Today, marine terminal operators must move ever-increasing volumes of cargo through existing limited terminal acreage,” said Richard Rovirosa, CEO & General Manager, Port Everglades Terminal. “eModal’s PreGate and Fee Manager applications provide us the ability to improve gate flow and streamline our operations, ultimately expanding capacity and allowing more throughput while providing better visibility and service to our trucker and shipper community.”
Everport Terminal in Tacoma Goes Live with eModal PreGate Appointment Solution to Drive Cargo Velocity
Everport Terminal Services Tacoma, operator of Pierce County Terminal (PCT), a 140 acre container terminal in Tacoma, Washington, has successfully deployed the eModal Community Portal (eCP) PreGate appointment module.
The eModal PreGate appointment module provides a customizable solution that allows Everport to specify which transactions require appointments, which information must be provided by dispatchers, and the length of appointment windows and grace periods. By collecting critical data in advance and enabling the terminal to proactively plan for trucker arrivals, the PreGate solution can improve gate efficiency, reduce turn times, and drive cargo velocity for all port stakeholders.
Husky Terminal and Stevedoring Goes Live with eModal PreGate Appointment Solution to Reduce Turn Times and Improve Gate Efficiency

Gridlock at the Gates: Mandating Appointments and Extended Gates?
The import surges caused by mega-ship calls are forcing beneficial cargo owners to take a harder look at truck turns times, and what marine terminals are doing to keep them down and predictable. Terminal operators, truckers, BCOs, and technology providers understand the factors that contribute to gate congestion, and they are implementing measures to eradicate the problems when possible, or at least mitigate the bottlenecks. The Harbor Trucking Association of Southern California has detailed data going back five years that tracks increased truck turn times due to peak-season volume surges, changes in vessel deployments due to carrier alliances and labor disruptions. The HTA also tracks improvements in turn times resulting from slack season drops in container volume, implementation of trucker appointment systems, and formation of neutral chassis pools. Terminal operators are adjusting to the mega-ship cargo surges with process improvements such as container dray-offs and peel-offs, extended gate hours, and trucker appointment systems. Technology providers have developed a number of tools that give truck dispatchers real-time visibility to gate queues and congestion at specific locations within the marine terminals. BCOs have developed their own preparedness programs to guard against interruptions in cargo flow, and to recover from incidents when they occur. The industry has made significant strides in reducing marine terminal gate congestion, but more work remains. This session will analyze the state of gate efficiency at North American ports, and where it needs to go to increase fluidity.
